Preparing A Home Portable Generator For Use

To prepare a home portable generator for use in case of an emergency, you must follow some critical steps. First you must acquire a portable generator, a supply of fuel for the unit, find a location to operate the unit from, and wire it into the home wiring system. Remember that if you are storing fuel for extended period of time, you will most likely need to buy a stabilizing agent for the fuel to keep it from going bad. Extra fuel should be rotated out and replaced on a regular basis to keep it fresh.

The portable generator location is dependent on where your home electrical service is located and where you have access to place the unit away from the living area. You want it close enough so the cost to wire into the home is not prohibitive, but far enough away that the sound of the portable generator running will not be a disruption to your home. If the unit does not have automatic start-up when power is off, remember to have a way to get to the unit at night if lights and power are off. A portable generator will do you no good if you are unable to get to it to start it up. For security purposes, you might want to enclose the portable generator in a chain-link or wire fence to protect from theft and children at play.

Wiring a generator into the home wiring system should be performed by a licensed electrician. There are issues that must be addressed to protect not only your family, but also other people and workers on the normal electrical system. Electricity will operate in either direction, so you must put filters on your unit to keep it from charging the normal electrical system. The cost of the parts including the switching box is not cheap, possibly several thousand dollars. The portable generator should be installed in an open ventillated area with a roof or canopy covering to protect it from the weather but still allowing adequate exhaust ventillation and carbon monoxide dissapation.

Be sure to follow any break-in procedures required on the portable generator. This may include changing the oil after a few hours service to clean out the metal particles from a new engine. Once the unit is installed and tested, you should then run the unit at least once a month with a partial load on the generator to keep the unit in top operating condition.
